Stephanie got to live her Beauty and the Beast dreams in the fairy tale land during our amazing day in Colmar. We had good food, a great dessert, and a great deal on a hotel. However, this was a moms trip to Europe, we needed to go meet our moms. Our moms were flying into Frankfurt, Germany. So the next order of business was traveling from Colmar to Frankfurt. We choose to travel via Flixbus. No it is not a bus operated by Netflix
How to get from Colmar to Frankfurt
The three most efficient ways to get from Colmar to Frankfurt are by Plane, by Train, and by Automobile (well in our case bus).
Colmar does not have an airport. This is what makes getting to colmar a bit tricky. In order to fly from Colmar to Frankfurt we would have to take the train from Colmar to Saint Louis and then a bus from Saint Louis to EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. At that point you would take a plane to frankfurt. However, KLM is the only airline to fly this route directly and it can be a bit pricey. For our travel dates the cheapest flight was about $160. The flight itself takes an hour and between the train, the bus, security, and the plane ride, it probably does not save much time, if any.
The most efficient way to get to Frankfurt from Colmar is by train. You can catch a train from the Colmar Central Train Station. The train will get you to frankfurt in about 3 hours depending on routing. As there is no direct connection between colmar and frankfurt you will need to change trains at least once (sometimes twice). If you plan your trip ahead of time, prices for the train are not all that bad. They typically run about 40€-45€. However, if your plans are uncertain and you book last minute you will be looking at closer to 80€.
The cheapest way to get to Frankfurt from Colmar is by FlixBus. Flixbus is a low cost intercity bus service that has been blowing up in Europe over the past 6 years. It offers the opportunity to travel between major, and less major cities, easily and inexpensively. Recently, FlixBus has expanded to the United States, but it hasn’t quite caught on yet. A FlixBus between Frankfurt and Colmar takes just under 4 hours. FlixBus tickets from Colmar to Frankfurt vary and can be as low as 11.99€. For our trip we ended up paying 14.98€/person.
The FlixBus Experience
Our FlixBus was scheduled to arrive at 11:25 am. It was about 10 minutes late and actually arrived at 11:35. We quickly got on our bags put into the hold of the train and boarded our bus. The seats themselves were relatively comfortable, but provided very little legroom. For comparison’s sake you will have less legroom than the average economy plane. This actually became pretty tough on a five hour ride. Luckily our bus never got more than half full. Stephanie was able to move up to the row in front of me giving each of us our own row.
The Bus itself had a USB port at each seat, allowing the rider to keep their phone completely charged even when using it the entire ride. Each bus is also equipped with free wifi. Which would have been extremely useful, but it cut out about an hour into the drive as we entered Germany and never came back on. I don’t know the reason it cut out, but as I don’t have 4G data on my phone when abroad, it really limited my activities.
The driver must have been trying to make up time given we were a little late, because he was driving quickly and moving in and out of lanes. I did not mind it so much, but Stephanie has a fear of car crashes, and he clearly wasn’t driving as safely as he should have. That being said we did make up some time and arrived in frankfurt on time in one piece.
FlixBus is an extremely cheap way of traveling between frankfurt and colmar. Almost 4x less than going by train and 10x cheaper than plane. While this bus itself isn’t as comfortable as it could be, they do a great job getting you from Point A to Point B, and if the Wifi were fully functional it would be an even better experience.
