After spending three hours at Monterey Bay Aquarium, my second breakfast at Little Swiss Cafe was starting to wear off. It was time for some lunch. So I decided to head to Compagno’s Market and Deli for my second (errrr…third) meal in Monterey.
Compagno’s Market and Deli
A visit to Compagno’s Market and Deli at some point in the day was not optional during my time in Monterey. This restaurant came highly recommended by one of my friends who grew up in Monterey. Basically, she told me that we could not be friends anymore if I didn’t check out Compagno’s while I was Monterey.
Turns out that not only is she in love with Compagno’s but literally everyone who has been to Compagno’s raves about it. Compagno’s is the number 1 rated restaurant on TripAdvisor rating 4.5 with about 350 reviews. Given the reviews and my love for anything stuffed between two pieces of bread, I had to check it out.
Compagno’s itself is nothing to look at. Essentially, from the outside it is just a run down old corner convenience store. Heck, I initially drove past it on my first pass as it barely even had a sign. Once you get inside it really is just a local convenience store.
That being said, Compagno’s is a dive and knows it is a dive. Compagno’s is all about the Food.
When I walked into Compagno’s Market and Deli the line was almost out the door. This more than anything got me excited. You know that the food is good when people are willing to wait in line for a takeout place.
Compagno’s has an extensive sandwich menu offering the many varieties of sandwiches that you would expect at a traditional New York Style Deli.
While they are known for their sandwiches, Compagno’s has some of the standard deli side options and some absolutely fantastic looking cakes.
I ordered a whole Marine Special. The Marine Special is a chicken breast and bacon sandwich topped with ceasar dressing and melted Pepper Jack Cheese. This and all of Compagno’s sandwiches are massive. I had no clue when I had ordered my sandwich, but one whole is more than sufficient for two people, especially if you buy some chips or a side to go along with it.
As Compagno’s only has the one table to eat in, I figured I might as well head back to 17-Mile Drive and have a picnic at the beach.
This sandwich was absolutely amazing. While it absolutely was big enough for two people to split, I have no shame in admitting that I scarfed this monster of a sandwich down on my own. Compagno’s sandwich was, no exaggeration, one of the best sandwiches that I have ever eaten in my life. Everything went absolutely perfect together, and the bread was soft, and fresh. I have absolutely no complaints about this sandwich (which is saying something because if you ask my mom I have been complaining since I could talk).
The Average price of a whole sandwich at Compagno’s market and Deli is about $12 This is an amazing deal given the size of the sandwiches. You could easily take one of compagno’s sandwiches and split with someone or save half of it for later. You could split whole sandwich or save half and add a side and likely spend less than $10 per meal. I ended up spending $12.50 and felt like it was an amazing value.
Compagno’s Market and Deli serves an amazing massive sandwich. The sandwiches they serve are more than worth the average $12 a sandwich cost and their cakes look absolutely stunning. Compango’s is a must stop restaurant if you are even in Monterey, and is totally worth losing a friend over.
