Our moms were really enjoying our trip to Europe. Stephanie and I were falling in love with Berlin. Its unique history and awesome alternative and art scenes really captured us. Of course we had to eat. This is a requirement to survive, and the most difficult task on this trip. But Henne was a hit. So I decided to go with another surefire hit, burgers. Everyone, well everyone who eats meat, loves a good burger, and I like to try to best burger everywhere I go. In Berlin people rave about Burgermeister.
Burgermeister
If you have been following Happy Wallet Adventures you know that I love a dive. Burgermeister is about as divey as you can get. Its original, and still active location, is a refurbished trainstation bathroom that is located directly under the U-Bahn track at the Schlesisches Tor train station. However, if eating in a former bathroom weirds you out there is a second location in Kreuzberg right across the Kottbusser Tor U-Bahn station. This second location is larger and has more indoor seating.
This really the iconic place to get a burger in berlin. it appears on almost every best burger in berlin list. It is however, very much a fast-casual sort of restaurant. So do not expect the gourmet Burger you might get in a more expensive sit down joint. However, at Burgermeister you get an extremely good burger, in a funky restaurant, and it is cheap. Clearly Burgermeister hits every single one my checkboxes for an ideal restaurant.
Burgermeister’s Food
Whether it is true or not, I believe that if a restaurant has an extremely limited menu it is going to be good. Burgermeister is one of these restaurants. While not as limited as In-N-Out, they only have 7 burger options. Hamburger, Cheese Burger, Chili-Cheeseburger, MeisterBurger, Double Meister, Hausmeister, and Tofu burger.
They also have a handful of fry options as well.
With the exception of the Double Meister, which is 7.30€, everything on the menu is under 5€, which means a burger fries and a drink will run you less than 10€.
Our Order
As it was extremely cold outside, we decided to ensure we had some indoor seating, and decided to eat in the former restroom, though i do slightly regret it just for the novelty. I ordered the Meisterburger with a side of fries topped with cheese, caramelized onions, and bacon. This combined with my Bluna Orange came in at exactly 10€.
Stephanie also ordered the Meisterburger with a side of fries and a Afri Cola. Her meal totaled 8.80€.
Our burgers were both fantastic. Despite being a fast-food style burger joint (I hate to say that because I feel like it is an insult), our burgers were absolutely perfect. After reading review after review on tripadvisor saying that this is the best burger ever or at least the best in berlin, this lived up to the hype. Everything tasted extremely fresh, well cooked and seasoned.
Burgermeister reminded me a lot of In-N-Out back in the United States. While they don’t taste the same, they both have similar presentations and concept. Both Burgermeister and In-N-Out serve a quick and delicious burger made with fresh ingredients for an affordable price. I can say that next time I am in Berlin, I really hope to go back someday, I will stop by Burgermeister again, but this time I will go to the original one!
Overall
Burgermeister is quite possibly the best burger in Berlin. It is at least the one with the most character. All for under 10€ Burgermeister is a must try in Berlin.
